Unlike systems built on alphabetical sequence, it assigns letters according to their phonetic vibration, which practitioners consider closer to how a name is actually spoken and experienced.
In Chaldean numerology, 9 is considered a sacred and complete number representing universal wisdom, so no letter is deliberately assigned to it, leaving letter values to run only from 1 to 8. A name can still reduce down to a final 9 through addition, but no individual letter contributes a 9 directly, which is the main structural difference from the Pythagorean chart where every digit 1 through 9 is assigned to letters.
The compound number is the total sum of all letter values in a name before it is reduced to a single digit, for example a name summing to 25 before reducing to 7. Chaldean numerology treats this pre-reduction number as carrying its own distinct meaning separate from the final reduced digit, so two names that both reduce to 7 can still be read differently depending on whether their compound was 16, 25, or 34.
